WORKING HOUSE FIRE ON NORTH STREET
Saturday, March 22, 2008
-
On Saturday, March 22, 2008 at 11:59 a.m., as Ambulance A-42 was returning from a previous incident, they contacted Kent Center advising them that Milford Police Officer was in the area of the 300 block of North Church Street reporting smoke coming from a residence. Asst. Chief Bill Carpenter (42-17), hearing the same transmission, arrived on scene just as the Carlisle Fire Company (Station 42) was being dispatched. Asst. Chief Carpenter reported that he was on scene with a 2 and a half story single family dwelling with heavy smoke showing from all 4 sides and divisions and fire showing from Delta side, Division 1. He also requested an upgrade to a working house fire, which automatically brings all apparatus from Station 42 and a two piece engine company standby for Station 42. Engine 42-4 responded with Chief Charlie Vanaman (42-15) as officer, driver Chief Engineer Eugene Rust and 5 masked firefighters. Asst. Chief Carpenter advised Engine 42-4 to pull just past the residence and hand stretch a 5 inch line to the hydrant at the corner of NW 4th and N. Church Streets and lead off with two 1-3/4 attack lines. Firefighters entered the structure from both the Alpha side, which had access to the 2nd floor, under the direction of crew leader Capt. Rudy Hitchens (42-21), and from the Baker Side which had access to the 1st floor and rear of the structure, where a bulk of the fire was found, under the direction of Chief Charlie Vanaman (42-15). Because of the overhead electric lines, Ladder 42, under the direction of Capt. J.R. Griffith (42-19) was positioned in an adjoining lot across the street from the fire so it could easily access both the Alpha/Delta sides if necessary. The crew of Ladder 42 was split. Part of the crew was assigned to assist with the hand line deployed into the Baker side and the 2nd crew was assigned to placing ladders and accessing the roof to begin ventilation. Because of a second house within close proximity of the fire, Tanker 42 was positioned so it could easily access and deploy hand lines to the Baker side of the 2nd home if there would be a need due to exposure. Engine 42-5 and Rescue 42 were assigned to come in on N.W. 4th Street and stage at the intersection just north of the scene and Engine 42-2 was assigned to standby at the hydrant at NW 3rd and N. Church, with all manpower from these units coming to Engine 42-4 for assignments. Asst. Chief Carpenter requested City of Milford to respond for both electric and water services to be disconnected. Division 1 officer Chief Charlie Vanaman requested a third 1-3/4 line be placed in service to the Charlie side of the structure. At this point, Asst. Chief Carpenter requested that Kent Center move the 2 piece engine standby (consisting of Engine 52, Houston and Engine 57, South Bowers), into the scene and replace them with another 2 piece engine standby (Engine 49, Frederica and Engine 75, Ellendale). Division 1 officer Charlie Vanaman and Division 2 officer J.R. Griffith reported that both primary and secondary searches were completed and that the fire had been extinguished, but there would be extensive overhaul. Asst. Chief Carpenter placed the incident under control at 12:45 hrs. and requested that American Red Cross be contacted for the residents. All units were back in the Station at 13:52 hrs. Responding units 42-4, Ladder 42, Tanker 42, 42-5, 42-2, Rescue 42, A-42, Engines 52, 57, 49 and 75, Delaware State Fire Marshal and Milford Police Department.
